November 3, 2008 episode
Leonard and Sheldon are talking to prospective grad school students, but even though Sheldon was very abrupt and rude to them, he ends up getting a groupie - Ramona (who looks an awful lot like a very young Anne Lockhart), who hangs on his every word. She brings dinner to his apartment, where Howard, Raj, Penny and Leonard are an audience watching them, but after a comment by Ramona, Leonard convinces everyone to leave the two of them alone.
I loved the discussion about how Sheldon would reproduce, whether it was mitosis and Sheldon would just split in two or whether Sheldon would have larvae.
When Leslie is her general rude self to Sheldon, Ramona ends up standing up for him and responding to her insults in kind. And Leslie was wearing a Domo shirt! WOW!
Sheldon gets more than he bargained for when Ramona pushes him to work on his research more, even giving up Halo night while Ramona gives him a pedicure. However, when she also won't let him "waste time" on "Battlestar Galactica" or comic books or video games and won't leave him alone, Sheldon desperately tries to get Leonard to help him, but his pleas for the Skynet clause, the Body Snatchers clause and the Godzilla clause all come to nothing since none of those situations are appropriate.
In the end, though, Sheldon makes his research breakthough, and when Ramona suggests getting co-credit, he kicks her to the curb. Sheldon then ends up with yet another groupie, and he still doesn't get it and thinks he's just getting free meals out of them.
Then, Sheldon eats so much that he splits in two! Oh, no, wait, that was just Leonard's nightmare.
November 10, 2008 episode
At the start of the episode, the boys are playing Klingon Boggle! That was really funny, even though I generally hate Boggle. Penny comes in and wants to use their TV to watch "America's Next Top Model", which ends up rivetting all the boys except for Sheldon, of course, because of all the hot model wannabees. When Howard gets Penny to confirm that they're all in a house together locally, he tries to pinpoint the location of the house with Raj's help.
Penny makes the fatal mistake of taking one of Sheldon's onion rings when he gets up for a minute, but though the boys are able to convince him to put it back, Sheldon notices that his onion rings are not all in the same place. He has a "three strikes" rule, and that's her second strike. When she refuses to move from "his seat" to prove a point, he issues her a third strike and banishes her from the apartment, setting off World War III between the two of them.
When the boys visit the restaurant that Penny works out, she refuses to take his order and tells him that he's banned from the restaurant. After Sheldon makes a fuss with the manager, Penny brings him his food but dares him to eat it, implying that she's done something to it.
Sheldon cuts off Penny's access to their WiFi, and then Penny follows Sheldon at 8:15pm on a Saturday night, which is his regular laundry time, but she's arranged for all the washers to be occupied so he's thwarted. But then he takes her laundry and hangs them up on telephone wires.
To put an end to the war, Leonard offers up Sheldon's cryptonite, which Penny is reluctant at first to use. Sheldon then gets a phone call from his mother, who berates him for what he's done, and he's forced to take down her laundry and apologize to her, ending the war. The last scene between them was killer!
Howard and Raj end up finding the house that the models are in and pose as cable repairmen to get in. Umm, ok, what the heck is Raj going to do since he can't talk to any of them? The husband pointed out a problem with this particular sub-storyline in that if the show is not done in real time, they wouldn't still be in the house. I don't watch the show, so I don't know if they're like "Survivor", when it's all done or at least mostly done by the time the show is aired, or whether it's like "Big Brother", which is done only a couple days ahead of time at most.

"Desperate Housewives" - October 26, 2008 and November 2, 2008 episodes
October 26, 2008 episode
At a surprise birthday party thrown for Karen, we get flashbacks on the events that happened in the five years between last season and this season.
When Gabrielle first found out she was pregnant, Carlos admitted that he didn't get the vasectomy that he said he had.
After Susan's divorce, she hired Jackson as her painter and then they started their no-strings relationship. But now, he wants to move in and have a real relationship, which she says no to.
Tom was in the hospital for some reason or other, and that resulted in his mid-life crisis and getting the sports car. Now, he's sold the restaurant, and he wants to buy an RV and tour the country. Lynette is concerned about the kids, but he totally blows everything off and then gets angry when she's more pragmatic. Yeah, I'm so over Tom. Jerk.
Orson had gone to prison and Danielle had taken Ben, so Bree fell off the wagon and started drinking again, but Katherine was pushing her and was there for her and got her on her feet again. Orson wants to tell everyone about his new role in the partnership, but Bree is reluctant.
Dave has been messing with Karen's house, so when she comes after him with a bat at the party, she's taken away in an ambulance. And it's made clear that Dave is after Mike.
November 2, 2008 episode
Tom finds a rehearsal space for the band, which consists of Dave, Tom, Mike, Orson and Carlos. Tom also sets up the place like a bachelor pad. Porter has been sleeping with a friend's mom, but Lynette sees her and thinks Tom is cheating on her.
Jackson broke up with Susan because she wouldn't let him move in. Susan finds a girl in his shower when she goes to make up with him.
One of Carlos' country club clients wants him to go with her as a personal masseur to Europe. He has inadvertently been "finishing her off" with his massages, and she gets Gabrielle to agree to the trip by tempting her with fancy dresses if she takes the family along.
Katherine thinks about moving to be near Dylan since she feels pushed out of the partnership. But Bree doesn't want her to go, and Orson says Bree told her how much she helped Bree when Orson was in prison. Bree sets her up with a guy who Orson claims to be a college roommate but who he later admits he met in prison, so Katherine is mortified that she slept with him.
Lily Tomlin plays Karen's sister. That was weird.
Dave's brother died in prison, killed by Mike in self-defense, which is why Dave is after Mike.

"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" - November 3, 2008 and November 10, 2008 episodes
November 3, 2008 episode
Ellison opens the door to find a mirror image of himself, which turns out to be a terminator who looks just like him. The Ellison-bot tries to kill him, but the bot is instead killed by Cromartie, much to Ellison's surprise, but Cromartie says that Ellison is going to be the one who will lead Cromartie to John and Sarah. Ellison is later arrested for murder, for a murder that was presumably committed by his lookalike bot. Catherine goes to visit him in jail and agrees to help him. In the guise of a police officer, Catherine gets the eyewitness to the murder to tell all the details of what he saw, which includes seeing the ball of light and the naked man appearing out of nowhere. The unbelievable tale gets thrown out and Ellison is released.
When John and Sarah and Cameron return home, they find that the house has been robbed, and all their money and diamonds and IDs have been stolen. Cameron figures out that it's because Riley left the house and forgot to turn the alarm on.
Cromartie ends up meeting Jodi, the girl who was in jail with Cameron, and Jodi recognizes the pictures of John and Cameron that Cromartie is showing around. Jodi takes him to the grocery store where John and Cameron normally shop, and John is there with Riley, but they miss seeing each other. Cromartie then canvasses the surrounding neighborhood and shows up at Casey's door. She pretends not to recognize the pictures, and when Cromartie leaves, she calls the house to warn them, but John ignores the phone. When Cromartie knocks on their door, John is freaked out, but Riley answers the door (which is what I was thinking, since Cromartie doesn't know Riley), and she manages to convince him that no one else is there, and he leaves.
Sarah and Cameron are able to track down the boys who robbed the house, and I laughed when one of them treated her like a girlie and was smack-talking her, to which she pulls out a gun and says to him "come and give it to me", totally deadpan. She then kills the group of them. Sarah finds a fourth boy in the bathroom, but she covers for him with Cameron and lets him go, making him promise to forget everything about what happened. Sarah has still retained some part of her humanity and can't bring herself to having this boy killed too, but I knew that was going to come back to bite her in the ass.
Sarah bans Riley from the house because she doesn't want John to get any closer to her, and she says that she just wants to protect him, but he angrily spits at her that she didn't protect him from killing the man to set them free.
At the end, Cromartie is shown questioning the fourth boy that Sarah let go. He seems prepared to tell Cromartie the truth, and you know the boy isn't going to survive his encounter with Cromartie.
November 10, 2008 episode
This episode is told from a hybrid "Rashomon"/"Time Code" viewpoint, where the story is told from the point of view of different characters in succession as the events unfold.
Sarah - She had invited Riley over for dinner, even though she was concerned about John's involvement with her. Cameron tells Sarah that she will talk to John about Riley, and then Cameron later tells Sarah that John won't see her anymore. After Cameron leaves, Sarah is taken off guard when Cromartie enters the house and captures her, but when they get to John's room, John isn't there.
Cameron - When she goes to talk to John, she lays in bed with him, scantilly clad, and she tells him how much danger he is putting Riley in. You could tell how uncomfortable her presence was making him. She then goes to the supply drop and runs into Derek there.
John - He's unnerved by his talk with Cameron, but then he sneaks out, and he meets up with Riley, and they take a bus down to Mexico to a city John knows. Unfortunately, a man recognizes John and knows that the authorities are still looking for him. A fight ensues when the man tries to blackmail John to keep silent, but Riley is caught in the melee and John returns. The authorities run a check on John, and John is allowed to call his family. His first call is to Derek, and his second call is to Sarah, but Sarah's unfamiliar responses alert John that something is wrong. Cromartie is presumably voicing Sarah's responses. John and Riley then later break out of their cell when Riley is able to distract the guard.
Sarah - She is kidnapped by Cromartie (who confirms that he knew where to find her because of the fourth boy in the bowling alley), and her attempts to escape only result in Cromartie throwing her in the trunk. She tries to get free, but then she hears a lot of commotion and the car is being driven and gunshots are fired, and when the car stops, the trunk is opened - and she sees Ellison and John.
Ellison - Because of the check run on John in Mexico, Ellison is alerted by one of his former colleagues about the check. Ellison goes down there just before Cromartie shows up and shoots the place up. After catching up with John and Riley, they take off in the car, and when Riley hears noises from the trunk, they stop and find Sarah in the trunk. Ellison says that he's paying back Sarah for having saved his life in the fire in the cabin. As they wait out Cromartie, John gets Riley to reluctantly leave and go home on her own, away from the danger of being with him.
Derek - He and Cameron have arrived at the jail after John's call, but John and Riley have already escaped. Derek gets Sarah's call and meets up with them.
Cromartie - After arriving at the jail, he searches for John. He then sees Ellison and is lured into a church, where he then engages in a spectacular firefight with Derek and Sarah (Jesus crucifixion poses abounding), but it's Cameron who ultimately takes him down, with the final shot coming from John himself. The ending of this episode is very much in contrast to the ending of the last episode, where he lamented having to kill the man, but John is already more hardened here, killing Cromartie with no mercy, though Cromartie is a terminator and not a man.
Cromartie's body is then buried, but Sarah loses it while trying to destroy his chip, and Ellison walks away as John is comforting Sarah, and Derek and Cameron are just looking on. I'm not really sure what the deal is with Ellison, because his actions in this episode seem to come out of nowhere from his actions working for Catherine. I'm not sure if he's just using Catherine to try to find out whatever he can and to have access to her resources. I guess we'll see how that continues to unfold.

Thanksgiving, got milk? and Bret Thompson
Thanksgiving is two weeks from today, and many people are planning their Thanksgiving menus.
As I mentioned in May, MILK entered into a partnership with the got milk? folks, and for Thanksgiving, that partnership has launched another promotion.
Here's the press release that includes comments from Chef Bret Thompson, owner of MILK, with regard to the low-cost recipes that he has for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Here's the link to the tasty recipes. The corn soup looks really good, but the husband and I laughed when we saw that, knowing Bret's penchant for corn. The thing that looks best to me is the green beans with caramelized onions and toasted almonds, since I'm a fan of green bean casserole. I'd leave off the rosemary sprig, though, since it's just a garnish and I have issues with rosemary. The husband was impressed with the apple cranberry bread pudding, but apple cranberry doesn't scream my name, so I'm not really into that, but the pumpkin profiteroles look pretty good.
After the recipes, you'll also find a list of top 10 money saving shopping tips.

that picture seems kind of fishy
Someone on a mailing list I'm on posted a link to this page of a website, which has some pretty funky food pictures.
OK, whatever.
But this picture caught my eye.

Click on the picture for a larger version,
where you can see the details better.
Picture originally taken by Carl Warner.
What a pretty picture, huh? Oh, and the picture is actually made from food. The rocks look like potatoes, and I'm thinking the dirt mounds/hills/mountains are chocolate cake. Oh, and the sea? Strips of salmon. Yeah, I think it's cool and creative, but mostly, I think it's a waste of perfectly good salmon sashimi.

"24: Redemption" - a nice little appetizer
I've been waiting for Jack Bauer for more than a year. I still have to wait until January for the real Jack Bauer (and Tony Almeida!), but in the meantime, I'll be getting a little appetizer of Jack Bauer on November 23 in a stand-alone two-hour movie. Seeing this movie is not supposed to be required to follow the action of the next season, though the female president and Jon Voight as the bad guy are supposed to be the same, I think. The trailer also shows that some other familiar faces will apparently [sic] be back as well.
Anyway, here's the link to the sneak peak trailer.

Farrell's is coming back!
A friend sent me this link today, with news that the Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour chain will finally be making its comeback in Southern California.
Many people might remember Farrell's from their childhood, but most of them closed. There had been a long-standing Farrell's in the San Diego area, but that closed as well. A couple new Farrell's locations have re-opened in the last several years, but only one has remained open in the continental United States, located in Santa Clarita. (There are also two locations in Hawaii.) The chain has been locked in a legal battle for many years now, and a Farrell's location had been scheduled to open at the Block in Orange in 2003, but the legal problems put a stop to that.
I'm glad to see that Farrell's will finally be coming back, with 2 locations due to open in 2009. I'm a little concerned about the "modern twists", but I hope they keep the same feel. The Santa Clarita location is pretty cool.
Here's my review of a location that opened in Temecula which subsequently closed.
And here's my review, with lots of pictures, of the Santa Clarita location.
Here's a really great unofficial site with lots of information about Farrell's. And for good measure, here's the official site.

peeling an egg
Has anyone ever told you that you're peeling an egg wrong? Well, your troubles are over! Because modern science has developed a way so that you can peel your eggs easily and without the fuss and criticism to boot!
DIY: Eggstractor - video powered by Metacafe
The science used in the machine is based on a practical method that is demonstrated here.
Peeling Eggs - video powered by Metacafe
So, the second method seems a whole lot faster, so I'm not sure why you'd go through the hassle of having to build a whole device with the wooden box and the plunger and plastic tube and making sure everything is the right size. Well, I guess the first method avoids the whole "is there any residual spit on the egg" question that would invariably pop up using the second method. But really, how many eggs is someone having to peel where it's worth the time and effort to make that machine? And why are they peeling that many eggs? Are they running a catering service, and their clients are ordered dozens and dozens of deviled eggs?
Me, I'm going to continue peeling eggs the wrong way by hand.

Bath & Body Works
I haven't been in a Bath & Body Works in a really long time. I used to like to go in periodically to pick up random things either for myself or other people. I went into a store today, and everything looks so different and changed around. The small sample sizes of lotions and gels and such used to be in a bunch of baskets around a pole that you could spin around. Now, they're all just in bins. There were also lots of new scents that I don't remember seeing before.
I was in the store to get some more of the Coconut Lime Verbena shower gel because I'm running out. I originally found the scent when we were in a Reno hotel last year, and I really love it. I like the whole Coconut Lime Verbena line, but I only bought the gel since I still have the lotion in that flavor that a friend gave to me. But, they were having a "buy one, get one 50% off" sale, so that worked out.
There are a couple of other flavors that I like from the store, which I have lotions for. I had first discovered Mango Mandarin - I love the smell of mangoes. I also picked up Plumeria a few years ago - that's a great smell too. I don't tend to like very strong-smelling or perfumy lotions, so I think that's why the fruit and light flowery smells work for me. I also have liked the Sun-Ripened Raspberry, which I still have a little bit of lotion of, but the husband *hates* raspberries, and he's complained that the scent of that lotion is too strong for him, so I don't use that lotion unless he's out of town. But I like their lotions because they're smooth and easy to put on without being too oily or leaving too much residue. And they smell nice!
I also have a little travel bag for toiletries, but I've been finding for a while now that it's actually too small, and I'm having to cram my stuff into it and then putting whatever doesn't fit into the husband's bag if we're travelling together. I found this nice bag at the store, so I picked it up, but it wasn't on sale at the store. Oh well.
I was walking around the mall with a Bath & Body Works bag, and because I had to do some gift shopping at Nordstrom, I had one of their bags as well. I was so pretending to be a girlie today! Yeah, I know, so not me. ;)

Yeah, I know, so not me. ;)

a different kind of "Repo Man"
I just heard about a movie coming out this weekend called "Repo! The Genetic Opera", and the plot actually sounds kind of funny. A company is letting people finance receiving organs, but if they don't keep up their payments, then the organs are repossessed.
That's some wickedly evil black humour.
Anthony Head aka Giles from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is listed as playing the repo man, so I'm figuring he has a fairly big role. I really like him and haven't seen him since his blink-and-you-missed-it one-line role in the film version of "Sweeney Todd". The film also lists the diverse casting of Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton, and Paris is supposedly quite good in this, whatever it is she's doing.
It might be a bit too bloody for me, but then again, I did see "Sweeney Todd" and hell, I even saw "Black Sheep".
Hmmm, the last sort-of-musical I saw was "Hamlet 2", so this might be something worth catching as well.
