Star Wars and Indy LEGOs!

Some new Lego sets in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones universes have been announced, and I think some of them are really cool.

This is a motorized walking AT-AT, which I think would be awesome to have, though I'm not sure about actually putting the thing together. I love all the little details and that it even comes with a dangling Luke!

This set depicts the Battle of Endor and comes with a lot of figures (including Ewoks!) and the glider and the chicken walker too.

Even though I'm not a fan of certain aspects of this film and this sequence, the Temple of Doom set still looks pretty spectacular. However, I think I might be tempted to just burn the Willie minifig...

Here's the link to the full list of new sets.

"Thriller" in Legos

Anyone who's read my blog knows I love Legos, especially vignettes done with Legos. Well, someone I follow on Twitter posted a link the other day to the entire music video of "Thriller" all done in Legos. It's pretty awesome.

Would you hire a Lego person?

As everyone knows, there are all kinds of Lego people, doing all kinds of different jobs. But how did they get those jobs? Didn't they have to apply for them? Ever wonder what the potential employer might think about hiring a Lego person? Well, wonder no more.

A Lego Man calls a construction business for a job. (Yeah, it's a prank call, which can be kind of mean because it takes up the other person's time, but I mostly like the visuals attached to the phone conversation.)

LegObama - The Inauguration

I've mentioned before that I like Legos, right? I've only been to Legoland in Carlsbad (near San Diego) once, but I'm hoping to go back this year. I had a blast looking at all the cool mini-land stuff.

Well, guess what I found today?

Legoland is replicating the recent inauguration!

One of the pictures from the slide show that shows the scene.

How frickin' cool is that?

Yes, in case you were wondering, they're all made of Legos. Well, except for the people looking at the display and the grass and trees around and such.

The official Legoland website says that the display will be up through Memorial Day weekend. I'm hoping I'll be able to make it down there while the display is still up.

Is that made out of Legos? Yep, 500,000 of them.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Legos last year, the world's tallest Lego tower was built, beating the record set the prior year in Toronto by 4 feet.

I'd like to know how long it took them to put it together. And how many boxes they had to buy. ;)

Are you made out of Legos?

Have you figured out yet that I love Legos?

I was listening to the radio yesterday morning, and they were talking about the new Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog which had just been released, and how in these increasingly-difficult economic times, a catalog of really expensive, totally unnecessary luxury items was a great thing to have.

But one of the things they talked about caught my attention.

Got a spare $60,000? Now, mind you, that's the price for one. If you want to, oh, I don't know, say, buy for friends of yours who are a couple, you'll have to pony up $120,000 for a pair. Oh, and that doesn't include shipping. And heck, if you want to do the whole family, you're going to have to save up a bit more money.

But if that's not to your liking, there's an entire Christmas book worth of stuff to choose from.

Indy Lego cake

I got a new follower request on Twitter today, and since I have my updates blocked, I have to approve requests. When I've gotten a request from someone I don't actually know, I look to see if they have a website and what their tweets are like and how many people they're following to see if I want to accept. I don't do professional followers. After browsing around, I accepted the request. In browsing the person's blog, I came across this particular post of a cake that the person's wife had made for their son's birthday. The pictures are really cool, though yeah, the gummy snakes still freaked me out. Kudos to AB's wife!

Death Star Lego (ok, and lots of other "Star Wars" toys too)

Well, this seems an appropriate time to blog about this particular subject.

First, background on last night. I knew that new "Star Wars" toys were being released today (July 26), but I wasn't sure exactly what was being released. I had a note to myself about 2 new Galactic Heroes (aka little squat people) sets that were coming out that I wanted, but I didn't know yesterday that their release date has been changed to September. As I was browsing the Toys R Us site, the husband noticed the banner proclaiming midnight openings of stores to sell the new toys. Uh oh. We browsed through the list, and since we have no huge Toys R Us stores near us, none of the stores that were doing the midnight opening were near us. I wasn't exactly sure what was being released, but since at the time I had thought the 2 Galactic Heroes sets might be, we decided to go anyway and picked the Glendale/Los Feliz store since it wasn't terribly far away.

We got to the store at about 11:30pm, and there was already a line of maybe 20 to 30 people, some of whom looked like they'd been there for a while since they were in fold-up chairs. We were joined shortly thereafter by a friend to whom I had mentioned that we were going. He didn't end up buying anything last night - I think he just came to laugh and stare at us! ;) But he's a huge Star Wars fan too, and it was nice to be able to hang out with him a bit there.

By the time the store opened at 12:01, there was quite a line behind us as well, and as we got into the store, people were jamming to get close to the huge display of toys. It was pretty much a feeding frenzy. Everyone else seemed interested in the new action figures that I didn't even know about, but since the Galactic Heroes were right in the middle of all that, we had to brave through them to get to what we wanted. We picked up three of the new sets.

When the husband had seen the picture of the first set online, he had let out this gasp. I kind of looked at him and said, yeah, Leia's cute in that outfit as a little squat people, but I didn't think it was that big a deal. He quickly corrected me by saying that he loved R2 as a drink cart, and that was the one he really wanted. And yes, if you really want the Destroyer Droid (which I do - I love them - they've joined my favorite Star Wars things list, which the rancor has been on for some time), then you have to buy Jar Jar too.

I should have done some more research last night because today, I found this Hasbro release schedule. I've noted future release dates for things I want, but it doesn't include everything I've heard about.

Speaking of which, I'd heard about the Galactic Heroes landspeeder, which looked really cool.

I haven't been able to find out where/when it's being released. Well, after doing another search, it looks like it was already released at some point, and now, you have to pay large amounts of money for it. Hasbro lists the product at about $13. But if you really want it, this site is selling it for a modest $70. REALLY? Seriously. Amazon offers it for less than that, only $35. I really like it, but not enough to pay 3 or more times the retail price.

One of the reasons I had thought about going to Star Wars Day at Comic Con yesterday was that Hasbro was going to have a presentation. Well, the presentation has been posted here. Here's a direct link to the slideshow.

These are four of the sets I've been waiting for.

But looky here - I hadn't heard about these. They look awesome.

These are the sets we had thought might be out last night/this morning.

Here are two new sets due out in February 2009.

As I mentioned, the rancor is about my most favorite Star Wars thing, and they've got this release coming in February.

It's ok, but I've already got an amazing rancor, so they're going to have to do something spectacular for me to buy another one. (But I am looking forward to seeing the rancors' planet in "The Force Unleashed".)

OK, so yeah, that was all background. Here's the real subject of today's blog. ;)

I was browsing someone else's blog and found out about this new Death Star Lego set.

It does look pretty awesome with all the different rooms/scenes, but putting together mega-piece Lego sets is not my forte. I wish they're release a Death Star in the Galactic Heroes series.

Here's the official site on the piece. Lego had previously released a partially constructed Death Star II, but that one didn't appeal to me as much. One of the complaints I'd read about the new upcoming Death Star was that it wasn't proportional to the awesome Millenium Falcon Lego set, and wasn't the Falcon supposed to be able to fit inside the Death Star? I didn't really think much of the complaint until I happened to mention it to the husband and the friend who we had met up with at Toys R Us last night, both of whom said that it was a stupid comment because given how big the Falcon set was, the Death Star would have to be ginormous (ok, they didn't use that word, but you get the idea) to be proportional, and most people couldn't afford how much that would cost nor have the space to put it. Hmmm, good point.

We're related to the head of catering on the Death Star!

A friend alerted me to this link about the cafeteria on the Death Star and a certain Dark Lord who is looking for some sustenance. I totally approve of his choice of entree - it's one of my favorite dishes.

I don't know who the comedian is that you hear though.

A certain someone should show this link to their mother, but I'm not sure if the R-rated language would be an issue.

Wall-E - first toy!

So I've been getting more excited about the movie "Wall-E", which comes out June 27. Well, there's some information about one particular toy that will be available. Here's the link to more information. If it's not supposed to be remote-controlled, it might be like the voice activated R2-D2 that we have. That's *exactly* what I want in Wall-E! I'm afraid of how much it'll cost, but I'm more afraid that I'll want it regardless. We could have 'bot wars. Or if a bunch of our friends get one too, we could have a Wall-E convention!

And I'm not meaning to talk about Legos all the time, but can I help it when stuff comes up? The link above talks about people who built a real Wall-E using Legos. What could be more perfect? Here's the direct link to the info on the Lego site.

More stuff to do during the margarita party - build Wall-E!

Is that birthday cake made out of Legos?

Today marks the 50th birthday of the Lego brick. I've loved Legos since I was a little kid. I didn't have a lot of toys, especially name-brand ones, but I had a box of mixed Lego bricks, and I loved playing with them. There were never enough bricks, of course, but that was the only problem. They used to have windows that you could open and roof tiles, but I haven't seen those in years. As an adult, it just means I can afford more Legos. :)

Even Google is joining in the celebration today.

Here's a Lego shop that I heard about today. You can buy, rent, have parties and even take classes! Redondo Beach is a bit of a pain to get to, but I might have to pay a visit just to check it out.

I also found this site about a Lego birthday cake. The picture below is taken from her site. She also has this site about a Lego wedding cake. I love the views of the "slices" taken out and the "yellow cake" underneath. Incredible.

New Year's Eve - December 31, 2007

We had originally figured on having a quiet New Year's Eve at home this year. That is, until Friday night. We were having dinner at Catal with friends, and we happened to look at Catal's New Year's Eve menu, and boy, did it look good, so we figured, hey, why not?

Since I don't like driving around at night on New Year's Eve, we decided to stay down in Anaheim for the evening. The husband got a decent-priced room, especially considering the lateness of our reservation, at the Hilton next to the convention center.

On Monday, we drove down to Anaheim and had lunch at the Hilton's main restaurant, Cafe Oasis. Their menu has more interesting things than you'd normally find in a hotel coffee shop. I ended up having some kind of salad, which I enjoyed, and the husband had a grilled salmon, which he enjoyed as well.

We checked into our room, settled our things for a bit and then headed out to the resort.

We had figured it would be pretty busy at Disneyland, so we wanted to make sure we'd still be able to get in later in the evening, so when we arrived around 3pm, we went into Disneyland just as far as getting into the turnstiles, and then we left, getting a handstamp (it was Belle) as we exited.

We went to the AMC to catch "Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem", and then we stopped into the Legos store so that I could see the new Indiana Jones sets that the husband had seen on Friday night. They were pretty cool, especially the gauntlet set from the first film, where there's actually a gold idol. And I think the snakes in that set wouldn't particularly freak me out.

We went back into Disneyland via monorail around 6pm, right as the Christmas parade was reaching the Small World area. It was very crowded in the park, and they were already running the warning announcements about the holiday fireworks possibly being cancelled because of the wind, which were pretty fierce already. We watched the very end of the parade, pretty much because we wanted to go on Small World, so once it ended, we joined the forming line, but at least we were fairly near the front of the mob, and we lucked out and got on the side that moved fairly quickly, so it wasn't too long a wait.

We then wandered the park a bit and then passed by the Veranda (next to POTC where they sell the chowder in a bowl) around 7:15pm, and the line stretched to slightly past half-way on the bridge over the POTC queue. I've never seen that line so long before. At first, I couldn't believe they were all waiting in that line. I figured I must be missing something. But at the end of the line, I overheard a family deciding on what they were going to order. I sure hope they had enough chowder and bread boules to go around.

We decided to do some people-watching on Main Street for a while. The porch seats were occupied, so we just sat on the steps for a while. While we sat there, they announced that the holiday fireworks were in fact cancelled because of the winds. I was surprised they were announcing it so early, but at least people were told way ahead of time.

We then headed out for our 8pm reservation at Catal.

Catal was only offering their special menu for the night. It was a four course set menu, though you did have some choices.

canape

cream of mushroom shooter with sliced truffle

first course selection

lobster bisque with sherry drops

baby vegetable stew with truffle broth and chive oil

crispy sweetbreads on persimmons with maple-balsamic gastrique

sushi plate with hamachi, yellowfin tuna, kampachi and uni

seared foie gras with warm brioche bun and apple butter

warm fingerling potato salad with smoke salmon, caviar and creme fraiche

main course selection

pancetta-wrapped monkfish with French lentils and kumquat marmalade

venison loin with honey-braised endive, parsnip puree and pomegranate reduction

olive oil-poached salmon with melted leeks, roasted beets and blood orange salad

petite filet of beef with seared foie gras, truffle-studded sweet potato pave and red onion confit

pan-roasted chicken breast with garnet yam puree, wilted braising greens and honey-lavendar sauce

braised lamb fettuccini with red onions, peppers, fromage blanc and preserved lemon zest

dessert

The flyer I got didn't have the dessert choices listed, and I don't remember what they were, though there were 3 choices. One was a goat cheese cheesecake, and one was a chocolate lava cake.

There were so many things on the first course selection that sounded good, so I had a hard time deciding. Ultimately, I chose the sushi plate, and the husband chose the sweetbreads (which was the other thing I had really been looking at), and for entrees, I picked the monkfish, and the husband picked the venison. For dessert, we both picked the lava cake.

I've picked up an affinity for lemon drops, so I had one with dinner again. Even though it was made by the same bartender who'd made it for me on Friday night, this one was much stronger. I noticed that when I realized after finishing about half of it that I needed to not look around quickly or I would get dizzy!

The mushroom shooter was yummy! It was actually a decent serving, and it took about 3 or 4 sips for me to finish it off.

My sushi was really good, with very fresh fish. All of them were actually sashimi servings, except for the uni, which was a little slab on a round ball of rice. I hadn't heard of kampachi before, but it's apparently some kind of Hawaiian fish, and it resembled red snapper. The husband loved his sweetbreads.

One of the sushi items that I love is monkfish liver, but ever since I was introduced to that, I'd been curious about the monkfish itself, which is why I decided on that for the entree. I loved it! The flavor was good, though fairly mild, and the consistency was similar to that of cooked scallops, which I found surprising. I don't see monkfish on a lot of menus, but it's definitely something I'd try at other places. The husband *loved* his venison. I had thought about that as well, since I love venison, but I had opted for the fish instead.

The chocolate lava cake came with a little bit of orangish sherbet on top, which was ok, but the cake itself was delicious! The dessert was garnished with a blackberry that had been cut into several pieces and placed along the edges of the plate. I gave Ryan a hard time because the menu had described it as "blackberry tartare". Ummm, ok, that just means raw blackberry. What the hell? Yes, we had a drawn-out discussion about that with him, as you'd expect!

Dessert also came with a little chocolate truffle for each of us. It pretty much melted as soon as you put it in your mouth. Yum!

We had a great time at dinner, periodically talking to the different staff who came by to say hi. At about 10pm, one of the hostesses came around with new year's party favors. For the men, they had black top hats with a gold band and "Happy New Year" printed on the front of the hat. For the women, they had a headband with "Happy New Year" and white feathers that looked like the old flapper-style. They also had noisemakers for everyone.

We got back into the park around 10:45pm, and we had thought about going to the midnight showing of Fantasmic, but that was announced as cancelled around 11:30 (the other two showings were also apparently cancelled because of the high winds), and they never announced (that I heard) that the midnight fireworks were cancelled - they just didn't do them. We rode Haunted Mansion Holiday and Pirates and then were to the Fantasyland side of the castle when they did the countdown to midnight. It sounded like they shot off a couple low-level shells just for the sound effect, but I didn't see anything, but they might have been low enough that the castle blocked my view.

We then went on Snow White and Pinocchio and then headed for the Toontown train station to ride the train back to Main Street. The park was open until 2am, but we were already tired, so we left around 12:45 to head back to our hotel.

The Great Grape Juice Lego Experiment

In my first entry of this blog, I mentioned having purchased some Lego kitchenware. Well, I finally did try grape juice with the two molds.

Here's the ice cube mold, with one of the grape juice Lego cubes on top.

The grape juice didn't quite freeze as much as water does - even with being in the freezer for two days, it was still quite watery on top, and the blocks were a bit difficult to get out whole. Because of the nubbies (what are they called anyway?) at the bottom that form the top of the Lego piece, some of them would break off or get smooshed coming out of the mold, all the more so because the blocks weren't frozen solid. Cute, and still tasty, though.

I decided to also make a grape juice Lego in the bigger mold that I bought.

That one was fun but again didn't quite freeze all the way. It's a pretty hefty block.

The next experiment will be actually baking in the bigger mold. The husband likes angel food cake, so I'm going to make angel food cake Lego bricks.

I love the LEGO store!

Let's make the first entry a happy one, shall we?

I had occasion to be at the LEGO store at the Glendale Galleria today, and boy, did I have two great finds. I found
this ice brick tray. You can make your own Lego blocks! We have grape juice in the house at the moment, so I'm going to make some grape juice blocks. But even better, I found this cake/jello mold. I can't decide if jello or banana bread would be better as the first try.

Hmmm, I'm noticing that LEGO is always capitalized on the site. Wonder why that is?
